Chapter 3 - The financial planning process

Establishing a relationship with the wealth manager

The wealth manager should explain the services he or she will provide and the extent and limits of his responsibilities. Particularly important is establishing the services that the wealth manager will not advise on. Wealth managers tend to be better at telling their clients what they can do rather than what they cannot offer. This should involve agreement on how the wealth manager will be paid and the way in which fees will be calculated. Part of the discussion should focus on how long the relationship will last and how decisions about your finances will be made.
